A new evening-only service dedicated to cooking and gardening programmes is launching on Freeview.
Merit is the latest service to be operated by ITV Digital Channels. It launches with three hours of programmes every evening from 9pm until midnight.
Launch programmes include ITV’s Britain’s Best Back Gardens from 2016, with Alan Titchmarsh. It’s followed by The Hungry Sailors, featuring Dick and James Strawbridge. The series first aired on ITV in 2011.
The service has taken over the Freeview channel number previously occupied by ITV3+1, channel 34. But only some viewers will be able to watch Merit. After a placeholder slate initially appeared on the Freeview channel list at the beginning of the month, the service moved to a low coverage multiplex on 29th July 2020 ahead of its launch. Merit is only available in households with access to the full set of Freeview and Freeview HD channels. YouView users within Freeview coverage can also receive the channel.
Due to the reconfiguration, some viewers may see a ‘channel not available’ message on channel 34.
Merit launches as a placeholder service on Freeview, securing a slot on the Electronic Programme Guide by broadcasting for a small number of hours each day on a low coverage multiplex. This keeps the slot available for a potential full service as and when capacity becomes available.
As a result of Merit launching, ITV3+1 has moved to channel 58.
