Half way through 2020, more linear channel operators opt to end carriage on satellite.
Joining Travel Channel and the HD version of Animal Planet, Asian news channels ABP News and News 18 are being pulled from Sky as June comes to an end. According to Sky’s Electronic Programme Guide, OutTV, which only joined Sky in the last few months will also be departing at the end of the month.
The year has already seen a record number of channels being withdrawn, not just on Sky but also on other platforms as broadcasters review alternative online provisions, with large audience increases for streaming services being reported. Sky, which offers the UK’s largest selection of linear channels has seen services including Box Upfront, Front Runner, Horse & Country, Trace Latina, Starz, Universal and VH1 close, with more to come this year when Disney pulls its linear channels.
Sky is reacting to this change by signing new deals with broadcasters to enhance its on-demand offering on Sky Q – notably with the inclusion of Disney+ earlier this year as well as a recent deal with Discovery, that will see additional on-demand services appear on the platform.
