How BT Sport will cover the Ashes

7 December 2021
BT Ashes Timeline function: a live cricket game is paused with the option to rewind to certain parts of the game.

Non-BT Sport subscribers will have access to limited highlights of the Ashes after 4pm each day. Meanwhile, BT’s popular Timeline functionality will be deployed on mobile, tablets and large screen TVs.

Action from the first test begins at 23:00 GMT on Tuesday 7th December 2021.

Coverage will be led from BT Sport’s London studio with presenter Matt Smith joined by former England internationals throughout the Ashes series, including Alastair Cook, Moeen Ali, Steve Harmison, Matt Prior and Mark Butcher, plus England women’s captain Heather Knight.

The commentary team for the first two tests include Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Isa Guha, Allan Border and Mark Waugh amongst others.

Timeline functionality

BT Sport customers will be able to watch every ball live with its Timeline functionality. Previously only available on mobiles and tablets, it’s now available on large screen devices. The functionality allows users to re-watch highlights such as boundaries, wickets, dropped catches and then move seamless back to the live stream.

Highlights and special programmes

Ashes Daily, a new daily live breakfast show (UK time), will provide fans with all the latest news, highlights and talking points from the action overnight.

A full 90 minutes of highlights will go live every morning for BT Sport customers following the conclusion of Ashes Daily and repeated later in the day.

On the last day of each Test, viewers will also be able to tune into The Cricket’s On.  The show will be hosted by Miles Jupp with a group of cricket-loving comedians giving their take on all five Test matches down under.

Highlights for non-subscribers

A shorter highlights package will also be available through the BT Sport app and website at 4pm each day. BT Sport customers on app and btsport.com will be able to access this package earlier in the day.

The best bits of Ashes Daily will be available on YouTube from 2pm. It will also be available as a podcast, through all major providers.

Coverage dates

Dates/locations liable to change due to the pandemic

  • First Test – Brisbane, 8-12 December
  • Second Test – Adelaide, 16-20 December
  • Third Test – Melbourne, 25-30 December
  • Fourth Test – Sydney, 4-9 January 2022
  • Fifth Test – Location To Be Confirmed, 14-18 January

Simon Green, head of BT Sport, commented:

“There is nothing quite like the rivalry of the Ashes.  This winter we are looking forward to bringing all the action from Australia to cricket fans in the UK and we hope to bring some escapism to those unlucky England fans who had hoped to be there.  Alongside comprehensive live coverage we’ll make sure that everyone can easily get their fix, whether that’s watching on the app using our interactive timeline, our daily live breakfast show, podcast or highlights on TV or the app”
