Netflix now releases weekly viewing statistics, in a bid to become more transparent about its data – not least towards investors, who never previously knew exactly how successful Netflix shows and films were.
The comedy action film, starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, retained its top position for the third week running. Other hits included Bruised, Halle Berry’s directorial debut film, which reach no.2 globally, but no.1 in most of the Americas.
Seasonal movies occupied third and fourth place, although ‘A Boy Called Christmas’ can’t be streamed in the UK on Netflix. The film is currently being shown through Sky Cinema, and available on-demand through Sky’s subscription services, including NOW (TV).
Two weeks ago, Netflix first confirmed its move to publish weekly data. This comes ahead of the UK’s audience research company BARB beginning to release regular Netflix viewing figures. BARB’s upgraded system will sidestep Netflix’s reluctance to officially release viewing figures.
Indeed, instead of showing how many watched a film or episode, and how many watched a film to the end, Netflix has chosen to use ‘hours viewed’ as its metric:
