The BBC says the “vast majority” of World Cup games covered by the broadcaster will be available in UHD and HDR.
As with the BBC’s other Ultra High Definition content, football fans will need access to the iPlayer on a compatible device and high speed broadband connection.
The BBC has published a full list of compatible devices on its website. But it was unable to confirm at this stage which games will not be offered in 4K UHD.
Viewers will be able watch in either SD or HD via BBC One or BBC Two on traditional TV platforms, including satellite, cable and digital terrestrial TV (Freeview).
In total, the BBC will air 33 live matches on TV and iPlayer across the 28 days of the tournament, while BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds will provide audio coverage of all 64 matches in Qatar. BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cymru will also cover all of Wales’ games.
ITV will have coverage of the remaining games, plus simulcast coverage of the finals. ITV coverage will be split between ITV1 and ITV4. Online, it will stream coverage on ITVX, the new streaming service that replaces ITV Hub. Although ITVX will offer UHD content on ITVX in the future, the broadcaster’s most recent position is that that UHD won’t be available at launch.
