Sports channel FreeSports is no longer available on Sky’s satellite service for the Republic of Ireland. It’s the second time the channel has dropped off the platform.
FreeSports was available on Sky Ireland channel 422 until this morning. Its latest stint on the platform had lasted just over 13 months, having returned on 27th July 2021.
Prior to that, FreeSports had been listed on Sky Ireland, but was removed on 8th January 2020.
FreeSports is still broadcasting on a free-to-air basis to Sky satellite viewers in the UK.
Incidentally, FreeSports celebrated its fifth birthday yesterday – it launched on 31st August 2017, primarily targeting Freeview users with extra sports coverage not normally available on the platform. Its Freeview outlet closed at 11:00am on 30th June. In July it was confirmed FreeSports and Premier Sports would be sold to Swedish media company Viaplay ahead of their launch in the UK this autumn.
Viaplay plans to rebrand the channels and add entertainment and factual programming. In the meantime, FreeSports continues to be available in the UK through Sky, Virgin Media UK, Samsung TV Plus and online.
