Warner Bros Discovery will close its golf-themed streaming service on 12th December 2022.
Golf TV fell victim to Warner Bros Discovery (WBD)’s policy decision to close smaller standalone streaming services in favour of creating a new single destination for all of its online streaming content.
Eurosport will pick up some coverage via Eurosport.com. Golf TV subscribers who want to stream live and on-demand coverage, alongside access to a range of other sports are being pointed towards Discovery+.
Instructional content previously available on Golf TV has moved to https://schools.golfdigest.com/
Golf TV was originally launched in 2019 as the main streaming home of PGA Tour Golf. The launch followed the signing of a 12 year deal between the PGA and Discovery. At the time, Discovery were hoping to do to golf what they had done with Olympic coverage across Europe, superserving fans with 360° coverage.
In an email to current subscribers, customers have been informed of their options. Across Europe, WBD says “Golf TV subscribers will have the opportunity to subscribe to a discovery+ or Eurosport subscription.”
Discovery+ short term arrangement
However, subscribers who move from Golf TV to Discovery+ will find it’s only a short-term arrangement. WBD is planning to merge it with HBO Max. This will create a brand new streaming service that will begin its global rollout in 2023.
In the UK and Ireland, content from BT Sport will be brought together alongside WBD content from Eurosport. This will create a formidable rival to Sky Sports.
But it remains to be seen if golf fans will be happy to have to subscribe to a wide-ranging streaming service if all they’re interested in is golf.
