Sky Glass is now available in the Republic of Ireland. But with a high price tag and some versions coming bottom of the energy efficiency ratings, it could be a hard sell.
But Sky hopes it will appeal to potential customers living in areas where satellite dishes aren’t permitted due to planning rules.
Sky Glass also becomes the first platform in the Republic which officially allows viewers to access BBC programmes on-demand, as a substitute to the BBC iPlayer. The BBC’s availability is part of a commercial agreement between Sky and the BBC.
Sky has also secured deals with Irish broadcasters RTÉ, TG4 and Virgin Media Ireland, although the deal does not extend to Virgin’s newest TV channel, Virgin Media Four.
Sky Glass comes in three sizes, 43 inch (€755), 55 inch (€999) and 65 inch (€1,299). But the 43 inch model rates G in terms of energy efficiency, on a scale from A (Good) to G (Poor). Other sizes rate slightly better, and come in the F category. This means the Sky Glass isn’t something that will necessarily reduce electricity usage. However, as Sky Glass aims to be an all-in-one device, users might be able to stop using other devices and cut electricity usage. But the cost, plus poor energy ratings may be a red flag for households in the midst of cost of living crisis.
Sky Glass requires upkeep of a Sky TV subscription to access various channels and apps. The service requires a broadband speed of at least 10Mbps. Sky recommends a fibre broadband connection.
Sky Glass channels – Republic of Ireland
Just like the UK version of the service, Sky Glass users in the Republic of Ireland may find some of their favourite satellite channels missing from the service. However, all major Irish and pay TV channels are available. Where HD versions of channels exist on Sky’s platform, users will see the HD service by default.
