Business news channel CNBC reports Warner Bros Discovery wants to call its new combined global streaming service “Max”.
The streaming service would replace Discovery+ and HBO Max in countries where one or both of the services are currently available.
In the UK, the service would become the long-term destination for the current BT Sport channels.
Quoting anonymous sources who leaked the proposed name to the broadcaster, CNBC stressed a final decision on the name has not yet been made. This indicates a late U-turn could still be made. Occasionally, this type of leak is designed to “test the water” to see the reaction.
WBD is in the process of bringing all of its different services together onto one online platform. The company wants to launch its new service in the USA next year, with a global rollout to follow.
In the UK and Ireland it would be the latest in a series of changes following mergers and acquisitions. It all started with Discovery launching Quest OD, providing a catch-up service to its Freeview channel.
In time, it grew and was replaced by dplay, which then incorporated services acquired from UKTV and Scripps Networks.
Then dplay was replaced by Discovery+ and included a premium tier which saw Eurosport content come on board. The addition of HBO / Warner Bros content is currently held back by an existing deal with Sky.
