Regional programmes in most English regions are cancelled in favour of reruns of the Blue Planet and Garden Rescue as BBC staff take industrial action to protest against cuts to BBC local radio.
As Clive Myrie handed over viewers to the nations and regions at the end of the BBC News at One, most viewers in England were treated to a short edit from Blue Planet II in place of regional news.
Only five regional bulletins made it to air on Wednesday lunchtime. These were: East Midlands Today, North West Today, Points West, Spotlight (South West & CI) and a combined London & South East bulletin. Points West led with the strikes as their top story (pictured above).
Similar disruption is expected for the main 6:30pm bulletin. The BBC has updated schedules to include a shortened edition of Garden Rescue. However, despite the programme listing change, some regions are expected to put out a full news service.
The strike continues tomorrow as BBC staff continue their action in response to cuts to BBC Local Radio in England. The BBC wants to divert some of the savings into improving news coverage online and creating local podcasts.
Similar action in Northern Ireland led to a more widespread disruption of services last month. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are unaffected by this round of BBC strike action.
