Streaming service Disney+ continues to attract new subscribers globally, but retains gap behind Netflix.
- Global growth in Disney+ subscribers reported by The Walt Disney Company
- But research indicates Disney is struggling to grow in the UK.
According to The Walt Disney Company’s latest financial figures, the number of worldwide Disney+ subscribers has broken through the 120 million barrier , an increase of 4.4% over the prior quarter.
Internationally, the figure jumps above 170 million when factoring in Hulu and ESPN direct-to-consumer products, not available in the UK.
However, research UK ratings body Barb paints a more muted picture as far as the UK is concerned. Its latest stats indicate Disney+ penetration in UK homes has dropped from 26.1 to 25.7% of households. 4.1% of UK homes take Disney+ with ads.
Disney will be hoping for an seasonal uptick in subscribers ahead of Christmas; the company continues to develop new UK-based series to attract British viewers.
What’s behind the growth at Disney+?
Disney+ has benefited from the release of popular titles from it various franchises. For example, the debut of new Marvel series and the ongoing success of Star Wars spin-offs, such as Ahsoka, helped to maintain a steady influx of subscribers.
The rise in Disney+ subscribers in November also comes at a time when the platform has continued to expand its international presence. Increased availability in more global markets, along with localised content, has helped to drive adoption in regions outside the US, further boosting subscriber numbers. The impact of the much talked about UK-based drama Rivals on subscriber figures remains to be seen.
- Disney+ is currently available from £4.99 (with ads) and £8.99 (without ads).
