India-based news channel WION dropped off Sky on Wednesday afternoon, three years after making its UK debut on the platform.
- Channel crashed off Sky’s satellite TV with no notice
- Follows sudden departure from Freeview in February.
WION, which belongs to India’s Zee Media, suddenly disappeared from Sky channel 519. Following its removal from the Sky Electronic Programme Guide, the satellite feed of the channel on the Astra 2G channel cut to black.
The free-to-air, English language news channel originally made its debut on Sky three years ago in March 2021. In March 2023, the channel joined Freeview as a standalone hybrid streaming channel, however it was removed on 21st February 2024.
Owner Zee Media has had a tumultuous start to 2024. Its planned merger with Sony collapsed in spectacular fashion. Since then, its shares have fallen and there’s legal action ongoing. But neither WION nor Zee have so far commented on the loss of service on Sky.
WION continues to be available online on various platforms.
