Disney+ enters live sports streaming with WCL deal

23 May 2025

Beginning later this year, Disney+ will live stream live coverage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, previously at home on DAZN.

  • Live coverage of new look competition available “at no extra cost” to Disney+ subscribers.
  • Follows in the footsteps of Netflix and Prime Video.
  • Europe-wide deal between Disney and UEFA.

Disney+ will become the only place fans can watch all live matches in the UEFA Women’s Champions League competition from October 2025. The new Europe-wide deal runs until the end of the 2029/30 season.

Next season marks a new era for the UEFA Women’s Champions League with the introduction of the 18-team League phase format. Bringing more excitement, unpredictability and bigger clashes from the League phase through to the 2026 Final at Ullevaal Stadion, Oslo, all 75 matches in the competition will be live streamed on Disney+.

With the deal, Disney+ takes over from DAZN in a number of European countries, including the UK.

Disney-owned ESPN, which at one point held UK Premier League rights, will produce all live matches for Disney+. Commentary will be available in multiple languages, alongside pre- and post-game programming.

Disney+ follows other streamers

Disney has for some time been rumoured to be wanting to start offering live sports to users in the UK and across Europe.

Its streaming service already offers subscribers on the other side of the Atlantic access to live content, including from ESPN and ABC News.

The streaming service was previously associated with a possible bid for UK Men’s Premier League rights.

With the move, Disney+ now follows in the footsteps of Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video service in moving beyond offering on-demand content. So far though, no streaming-only service has yet struck a deal to threaten either Sky’s or TNT’s dominance of traditional pay TV sports broadcasting.

Cost to viewers?

Disney says the extra action will be available “at no extra cost” to subscribers.

However, October 2025’s launch of Women’s Champions League coverage is around the time of the year when Disney unveils it’s annual price rises, which will no doubt incorporate the extra cost of the deal. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Additionally, at least in the UK, the move means Disney+ subscribers will technically need to be covered by a TV licence to watch live coverage of the Women’s Champions League. You can continue streaming Disney+ without a TV licence if you avoid live coverage.

Corporate comment

Karl Holmes, General Manager, Disney+ EMEA commented:

The UEFA Women’s Champions League is the very best in football performance, dedication, and passion. Bringing this incredible tournament to Disney+ customers and audiences speaks to our commitment to delivering a huge range of bold and dynamic entertainment. As women’s football continues to grow with audiences worldwide, we’re proud to offer the thrill and excitement of every single match to Disney+ customers across Europe, at no extra cost.”
