BBC removes redundant channel on Sky and Freesat

29 April 2024
  • The BBC now longer needs to broadcast two versions of BBC Radio 4 on satellite.

The BBC is removing BBC Radio 4 LW from satellite, weeks after the broadcaster discontinued operating a separate schedule for the service.

Ahead of the closure of BBC Radio 4 LW, which is now scheduled to occur in 2025, the BBC has since 1st April operated a single schedule across both FM and LW outlets.

The midday Shipping Forecast on Sunday 31st March 2024 was the last long wave only broadcast from BBC Radio 4.

That’s left the BBC broadcasting a technically redundant mono simulcast of BBC Radio 4 on satellite, alongside the main stereo broadcast of BBC Radio 4 FM.

BBC Radio 4 LW was finally delisted from Freesat channel 710 on Tuesday 23rd February. Sky will follow on Thursday 2nd May 2024.

Radio 4 continues as a single feed on either Freesat 704 or Sky 0104.

Most programmes formerly only available on BBC Radio 4 LW are now carried on BBC Radio 4 Extra instead. Meanwhile, live cricket is now on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra. And the BBC broadcasts the Shipping Forecast less often on all frequencies. That’s because Mariners have access to frequent broadcasts via their onboard maritime radio systems.
