BBC confirms mysterious iPlayer bug is fixed

2 June 2024

BBC iPlayer users had previously complained about a bug that caused an ‘Error 02050’ message to appear on their TV.

  • BBC confirms bug is gone after working with the manufacturers of the affected devices.
  • Problem believed to be an issue with the viewer’s device, not the BBC.
  • Affected users urged to update firmware.

The BBC has finally been able to confirm a long-standing bug that stopped some viewers from watching iPlayer content has been squashed.

The issue affected users of various TVs, including brands such as Bush, Digihome, Luxor, Panasonic, Technika and Toshiba. This included devices manufactured by the Turkish company Vestel, which produces a variety of TVs under various big and supermarket brand names.

In a statement, the BBC says that “after working closely with manufacturers, we can now confirm the problem was due to a direct issue with the individual device.”

Manufacturers believe most of the affected devices can be updated with a fix.

If you’re having problems

The BBC recommends that you check for a firmware update for your device. This may appear in your TV’s menus as ‘software update’.

If problems persist, or there’s no update for your device to resolve error 02050, you should contact your TV manufacturer’s customer support line.

A small number of devices may not be able to be fixed. Here, the BBC iPlayer can be accessed through a separate streaming stick, box or dongle connected to the TV.
