Technology used to make service available on connected Freeview TVs is to become obsolete this year.
Racing TV, which appeared on Freeview channel 261, has confirmed it has closed down programming ahead of the channel’s delisting on Tuesday.
In a note to customers, the channel said its programming was coming off Freeview because of technological changes. It was one of a small number of channels streamed to compatible TVs using MHEG-IC technology, rather than via the terrestrial airwaves.
Arqiva, its technical supplier, had advised Racing TV that the technology would no longer be supported after 2020. A growing number of devices can already no longer access such streamed services as manufacturer support ends.
Instead, manufacturers are focussing on HbbTV support, alongside the provision of apps, through which streaming services can be accessed.
Racing TV can continue to be accessed via the large screen apps on
- Amazon Fire TV
- Android TV
- Apple TV
…as well as via its existing mobile, web and satellite services.
