The Guardian’s new streaming service has gone live on its first platform and is now available to audiences across the UK and Europe.
The new service is now available on Rakuten TV, providing viewers in 43 countries access to documentaries and video journalism content.
It’s the first time The Guardian’s content will appear on a scheduled, linear channel as part of the Guardian’s global digital network.
In total, over 110 million households will have access to the service. The Guardian’s channel is the latest in a growing number of so-called ‘FAST’ (Free ad-supported TV) channels: relatively low-cost, linear channels, distributed on streaming platforms.
How to access
Not all versions of the Rakuten TV app contain access to its Channels.
Currently, Rakuten TV Channels are available on a number of major smart TV platforms, including LG and Samsung Smart TVs.
Cedric Dufour, Rakuten TV CEO, said:
“The addition of The Guardian to our linear channels bouquet further demonstrate our commitment in expanding the platform’s free offer with top tier content and brands, opening up new opportunities for our users as well as for advertisers to get in front of The Guardian audiences”.
Christian Bennett, executive editor for visual journalism, Guardian News & Media, commented:
“We are proud of our reputation for award-winning video journalism and powerful storytelling, and are excited to share a selection of our best Guardian series and films with Rakuten TV’s audiences across the UK and Europe”
