The BBC Scotland channel will remain the home of Scottish Championship coverage with BBC One Scotland retaining Premiership Highlights.
BBC Scotland has agreed a new deal with the SPFL that will continue live television coverage of Championship matches, Premiership highlights, radio commentaries, online and social media content.
This new agreement extends the broadcaster’s initial long-term deal with the SPFL from 2018 which resulted in the BBC Scotland channel becoming the home of Championship coverage, screening live matches regularly on Friday nights.
The agreement, which was due to expire in summer 2025, has been extended to summer 2029.
The BBC Scotland SPFL deal means the broadcaster will continue to cover:
- the cinch Premiership TV highlights on Sportscene,
- 20 live Championship games on the BBC Scotland channel,
- live radio commentary on BBC Radio Scotland,
- …and extensive clip rights on the BBC website.
The BBC’s Scottish TV and Radio services are available across the UK on Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media. The channels are also available on the iPlayer.
Corporate comment
Louise Thornton, Head of Commissioning, BBC Scotland said:
“We’re delighted we’ve reached this agreement with the SPFL which further strengthens our commitment to provide extensive coverage of the top tiers of the game.
Live Championship football has become a popular fixture of the Friday night schedule on the BBC Scotland channel, so it’s great news that will continue for at least another five seasons.
Combining that with the broad slate of live radio coverage and TV and online highlights from the Premiership over the same period is brilliant news for our audiences.”
SPFL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster commented:
“This long-term extension of our partnership with the BBC is great news for fans, for our clubs and for the SPFL. It follows our record-breaking deal with Sky Sports last season and guarantees the widest possible audience for what promises to be a cracking season ahead.
We look forward to working with our partners at BBC Scotland to showcase the very best cinch Premiership action on Sportscene, as well as delivering all the drama of the cinch Championship, with 20 live games per season on the BBC Scotland channel.
Alongside the excellent coverage on BBC Radio Scotland and via the BBC website and apps, fans of the cinch SPFL across the UK will be able to access all the action throughout the season, wherever they are.”
