Exclusive new content from Disney helped to counteract the increasing cost of the service, according to The Walt Disney Company’s latest results.
- Disney+ gains almost 7 million subscribers in last quarter.
- Company credits new shows including Elemental, Little Mermaid and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3.
Disney+ added nearly 7 million core subscribers in the last quarter in stark contrast to WBD who lost subscribers in the last accounting period.
That’s something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Bob Iger, the Chief Executive Officer at Disney, who noted “Disney has a strong hand that differentiates us from others in our industry.”
Star Wars series Ahsoka and the Korean original series Moving were also credited for the increase in subscriber numbers, despite the recently announced price rises.
Disney also told investors it expects the streaming business to reach profitability by the fourth quarter of 2024.
Disney+ has just increased its prices in various countries around the world. In the UK, existing subscribers have been automatically moved on to the Disney+ premium plan. They’ll pay the new price from next month if they don’t move down to the standard plan (lose UHD, but pay the same as previously), or switch to the new ad-supported plan.
It should be noted that during the last quarter, when Disney reported a growth in subscribers, Disney+ was offering a discount promotion, giving subscribers access for as little as £1.99 a month.
