How to avoid the 37.5% Disney+ price rise

23 October 2023

Most Disney+ subscribers will need to take action soon if they don’t want to be hit by the company’s price rise.

  • Subscribers who do nothing will see the price increase from £7.99 to £10.99 a month, a 37.5% increase.
  • Disney fans switching to an annual subscription by 31st October can avoid the price hike, by locking in the service for a one-off £79.90 until the end of October 2024.
  • Subscribers on a monthly plan need to switch in the coming weeks to avoid defaulting to expensive premium plan.

The clock is ticking as Disney+ prepares to increase its prices. And customers who do nothing will automatically move to the most expensive option. That’s despite Disney+ launching two new options in the UK. One is the same price as the current plan, but without 4K UHD and the other is £3 cheaper, but with ads.

From 1st November, Disney+ introduces a total of three different monthly payment tiers and two annual subscription plans.

Subscribers will be transferred to the new Premium plan, which will cost £10.99 a month. That’s an increase of 37.5% from £7.99 a month. In comparison, the current rate of UK inflation, measured through the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) is currently under 7%.

  • Existing subscribers will pay the new price on their first billing date on or after 6th December 2023.
  • New customers will pay the new price from 1st November 2023.

Avoiding the price rise

Disney+ subscribers can lock in an annual deal before the end of October. That way, you’ll get a whole year of Disney+ for £79.90, taking you through until the end of October 2024. Then you’ll move to the new prices, a year later than everyone else.

For customers happy to pay monthly, there’s an option to switch to one of the new Disney+ plans from 1st November.

  • You’ll be able to switch to the new Standard plan to continue watching Disney+ at the same monthly price as now (£7.99). However, you’ll lose 4K/UHD streaming (it’s HD only) and you’ll only be able to watch or download Disney+ on two instead of four devices.
  • Alternatively, the new ad-supported plan will cost £4.99 a month, including HD streaming and the ability to stream or download on two devices.

Alternative ways to save

Make the most of partnership deals with Disney+
  • Customers signing up with O2 may be eligible for free access to Disney+. Pay monthly customers typically get between three and six months of free Disney+ access with a contract. Pay as you go customers are not eligible for this promotion.
  • Tesco Clubcard users can exchange their vouchers into a three month Disney+ subscription. Existing Disney+ subscribers need to cancel their current Disney+ plan before redeeming the offer. The process is outlined on the Clubcard website, under the Terms and Conditions tab.
  • Club Lloyds members can select Disney+ as their ‘lifestyle benefit’, giving customers 12 months of Disney+ access at no extra cost. Again, existing Disney+ subscribers will have to cancel their current Disney+ plan to take up the offer. The process is outlined on the Lloyds Bank website.

All three currently give customers access to the Premium plan, but they may change for customers redeeming the offer after the price rises have come into force.

Customers with queries should contact the relevant company if they have questions about redeeming the offer. For queries relating to using the service, including technical support, contact Disney+ Customer Service.

Ireland

If you have family and friends in the Republic of Ireland, prices go up 22% from €8.99 to €10.99. Unlike the UK, the €10.99 monthly plan will be the only monthly option available from 1st November. However, Irish Disney+ subscribers can save by committing to an annual deal at the old prices before the end of October.
