Changes to RTÉ’s four main radio stations on satellite retains signal for Irish diaspora across Europe, but may require receiver upgrades.
- Sky Q and Sky+HD boxes should update automatically.
- Update sent to Freesat boxes last week.
Ireland’s RTÉ Radio stations moved satellite transponders on Thursday morning as part of the final stages of a technical update that’s affected how services are broadcast on satellite.
The radio stations, which are distributed across both the UK and Ireland via Sky and Freesat, are uplinked to satellite by Sky. Sky is in the final stages of migrating services it uplinks to the newer DVB-S2 standard, only supported on newer satellite receivers. As part of the change, RTÉ Radio has had to change frequencies.
Compatible receivers – Sky Q, Sky+HD, Freesat HD – should have automatically received an update to enable listeners to continue accessing the services. Users of older receivers will no longer be able to access the stations via satellite and do need to upgrade their equipment.
Irish diaspora outside the UK and Ireland, can continue accessing RTÉ Radio across Europe on the new frequency (see below).

I have Sky Q/Sky+HD/Freesat HD and I can’t access RTÉ Radio
Your box may have not received the update telling it to look to the new frequency to access the stations.
You may need to reboot your receiver. If you have a Freesat HD receiver and this issue persists, you may need to rescan, using the option in the receiver’s menu.
