Viaplay returns to the UK via Prime Video

9 July 2024

After disastrous attempt to establish sports and entertainment streaming service in the UK, Viaplay’s series and films are now available via Amazon’s streaming platform.

  • Former Viaplay UK subscribers lost access to Viaplay’s entertainment programmes in May.
  • The library of movies and series is available from today on Prime Video.
  • Free seven day trial available.

Viaplay is back in the UK, three months after handing over sports channel subscribers to Premier Sports and two months after closing its standalone movies and series service.

From today – Tuesday 9th July – Viaplay’s library of movies and series can now be accessed via Prime Video Channels in the UK. Subscribers will have access to thousands of hours of Nordic and European content. A free seven day trial is available, after which the Viaplay add-on will cost £4.99 a month.

Viaplay withdrew its standalone streaming service after financial troubles engulfed the company. That forced it to rethink its international expansion. By the end of 2023, it had agreed a deal to sell off its UK sports channels back to Premier Sports.

What’s on Viaplay via Prime Video Channels?

In addition to former content that was previously available on Viaplay’s own streaming service, a number of new titles are launching soon. These include:

  • Murderesses (22nd July): Inspired by Katarzyna Bonda’s bestselling true crime book, the series follows a rookie police officer uncovering treacherous family secrets.
  • Call Me Dad (29th July): Modern Danish comedy based on an idea by, and starring, best friends Alex Høgh Andersen and Magnus Haugaard.
  • Bendtner (12th August): Three-part docuseries on the journey of football prodigy Nicklas Bendtner.
  • Börje – The Journey of a Legend (24th August): Record-setting, six-part drama series on hockey hall of famer Börje Salming, starring Valter Skarsgård and Jason Priestley.

Corporate comment

Gerald Biart, Viaplay Group, VP Partnership, Growth & Marketing, commented:

“Given the appeal of high-quality Nordic and European content and our large content inventory in the UK, we’re excited to launch the Viaplay subscription channel in the UK and give viewers access to a wide selection of premium exclusive titles, including The Bridge, Threesome and the upcoming UK premieres of top performing dramas Börje – The Journey of a Legend and Murderesses. The Viaplay channel in the UK offers a broad content line-up, from thrilling crime dramas and relatable character-focused dramedies to fascinating true stories and gripping documentaries.”
