Four years after the original Sky Glass TV was launched, Sky has unveiled its second generation TV, plus plans for another new device launching later this year.
- 2nd gen Sky Glass TV on sale from 12th February.
- New Sky Glass Air launching later this year.
- Combined with Sky Essential TV, new devices aim to make Sky more affordable.
Sky today unveiled the new Sky Glass TV, now featuring an even brighter 4K HDR screen and an enhanced seven-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system built in.
The new Gen 2 Sky Glass TV will be available to buy from 12th February, starting from just £14 per month at Sky.com, Sky’s stores, Sky call centres and Currys.co.uk. It will also go on sale in physical Currys stores soon.
It’s possible to buy a wide range of TVs that have Freeview, Freesat or Freely built-in. But Sky Glass is the only TV to include Sky TV and its operating system Entertainment OS, which from now on is known as Sky OS.
Sky TV is accessed through Sky’s internet streaming platform, also available on Sky Stream pucks, for viewers who don’t want a Sky Glass.
For the 2nd generation Sky Glass, there are three sizes to choose from, 43”, 55” and 65”, as well as three updated colours, Volcanic Grey, Arctic Silver and Atlantic Blue.
A 4K advanced HDR TV
The brighter 4K Quantum Dot display promises to deliver crystal clear picture, while new advanced HDR and precision contrast enhancement makes darks darker and brights brighter. It has a wider viewing angle and an even more immersive picture with a brighter, more accurate display.
Sky Glass will automatically optimise the picture and sound accordingly. On the new Sky Glass TV, all the picture modes have been refreshed, to be even better at bringing out the best in every moment, whether it’s Entertainment, Movies, Music, Auto, Vivid, Extra Vivid and Sport.
Re-engineered sound
Sky Glass Gen 2 has been re-engineered to project even richer 360° cinematic sound. The enhanced Dolby Atmos sound system now has seven speakers, including a soundbar and dual subwoofer built-in. It has been designed to deliver a richer bass with improved vocal clarity.
As a result, Sky says there’s no need to buy a separate soundbar.
Installation
As Sky moves away from viewers needing to book an installer, its second generation TV has a stand that’s designed to be easier than ever, with two prongs that the TV slides onto, no screws or tools needed.
Alternatively, people can choose to add the new bespoke wall mount, that tilts, swivels and sits completely flush against the wall. It is also compatible with universal TV mounts for anyone who already has their own.
How much?
Sky is notably selling greater affordability for viewers wanting to invest in a Sky Glass TV. This is particularly important, as you’ll need to maintain a subscription to get the most out of the device, although a recent update to Sky Glass has opened up Freeview mode.
- You can pay for the new Sky Glass TV like a mobile phone, either all in one go, or spread the cost with interest-free monthly payments from £14 per month for the 43”, £19 a month for the 55”, or £24 a month for the 65”.
- You can also choose the length of TV subscription you want. A 24-month TV subscription promises the best price. But a 31-day rolling contract offers more flexibility.
- The Sky Essential TV pack opens up Freeview channels, plus Sky Atlantic, Netflix and Discovery+ Basic from £15 a month.
- Sky Ultimate TV opens up all of the above, plus all of Sky’s entertainment and factual channels, including Sky Max, Sky Comedy, Sky Crime and Sky Showcase. It’s available from £22 a month.
- There are additional fees for additional functionality, including ad-skipping and for channel add-ons including Sky Sports, TNT Sports and Sky Cinema.
Sky Glass Air coming later this year
Sky has also announced the launch of Sky Glass Air, coming later in the year. This aims to expanding the Sky Glass range to offer customers more choice about how they get the Sky TV experience, but for less money.
Sky Glass Air will have a 4K Quantum Dot HDR screen, plus global dimming and contrast enhancement that automatically brightens the screen for a clearer, more vivid picture. As well as 2.0 stereo speakers with Dolby Audio.
Just like Sky Glass Gen 2, it runs Sky OS, with all its advanced features, including far-field voice and superior content aggregation. It will come in three stylish colours, Carbon Grey, Cotton White and Sea Green, and three sizes, 43”, 55” and 65”. Pricing to follow later this year.
It will join the Sky range alongside Sky Glass Gen 2 and Sky Stream, giving customers the option to have a combination of all three in their home if they wish, all working seamlessly together.
