Australian Open streaming upgrade as WBD confirms UK/Ireland coverage

7 January 2025

Warner Bros Discovery has announced improvements to its streaming coverage of the Australian Open tennis tournament this month.

  • For the first time, streaming product innovations will be available to both web and app subscribers.
  • 250 hours of coverage on Eurosport, plus 4K UHD channel.
  • Once again, DMAX to carry highlights of the finals on Freeview.

Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) Sports is to serve up exclusive Australian Open coverage to millions of fans across its channels and platforms in Europe.

In the UK and Ireland, this will be through Discovery+ for the final time before new streaming service Max launches at the beginning of next year.

For the first time for its tennis coverage, popular streaming product innovations will be available to web and app subscribers. These include the popular timeline markers feature, which enables fans to easily navigate back to key moments such as key points, expert analysis and interviews so they never miss a moment of the action.

Coverage of the qualifiers has already begun, with full coverage of the main event starting from 00:30 GMT on Sunday 12th January. The finals take place on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th January 2025.

What’s on and where?

Discovery+ will screen live and exclusive coverage of every match from every court.

You’ll need a minimum of Discovery+ Standard to access Australian Open coverage (£6.99/€6.99 a month, or available at no extra cost on Sky Q, Sky Glass, Sky Stream).

Coverage is not available on Discovery+ Basic tier subscriptions.

However, if you have Discovery+ Premium with TNT Sports, your subscription also includes Australian Open coverage.

Eurosport will offer around 250 hours of live coverage on traditional broadcast platforms including Sky, Virgin Media and EE TV.

The Eurosport UHD pop-up channel will be available on Virgin Media. Availability on other platforms has not been confirmed, although limited 4K UHD coverage is expected via the red button on Sky platforms.

DMAX (Freeview channel 39) will broadcast free-to-air highlights of the finals.

Online, Eurosport’s suite of digital platforms, including its 12 local language Eurosport.com sites and its social media platforms, will carry free highlights content and offer the very best short video content across the tournament for all to enjoy.

Who is presenting?

Star names for this year’s Eurosport coverage include double Australian Open (AO) singles champion Jim Courier who will feature as part of Eurosport’s international coverage for the first time.

He joins seven-time Grand Slam singles champion John McEnroe, AO mixed doubles finalist Barbara Schett and Olympic silver medallist Laura Robson as Eurosport’s eyes and ears at Melbourne Park.

Following all the action from the dynamic mixed reality Curve studio in London, three-time AO singles champion Mats Wilander joins Olympic silver medallist Tim Henman and presenter Rachel Stringer for daily pre and post-match shows.
