Disney+ launches £1.99 subscription offer

6 September 2023

Both new and returning customers can benefit from the Disney+ offer, which runs from today for a fortnight.

  • Customers signing up will get three months of Disney+ for £1.99 a month.
  • The deal includes access to the new series of Welcome to Wrexham, The Kardashians and Loki joining Disney+ in the coming weeks.
  • But subscribers who don’t cancel before December will automatically move up to Disney’s new UK pricing.

Starting today, 6th September and running until 20th September, new and returning customers to Disney+ are eligible to sign up for £1.99 a month.

It follows a difficult year for Disney+ and other streaming companies, who have struggled to grow and retain UK customers. Internationally, Disney has come under fire from shareholders who have accused the company of misleading investors over streaming losses.

Nevertheless of the company’s turmoils, anyone signing up for the deal will join or rejoin Disney+ in time for a range of new series launches this autumn, which include FX’s Welcome to Wrexham season 2, The Kardashians season 4, both coming this month, plus Marvel’s Loki season 2, which arrives on 6th October.

Other highlights include the latest Star Wars series Ahsoka and FX’s The Bear season 2.

The discount offer comes after Disney+ announced it would be increasing prices in the UK from November. At the same time, it will be launching a new ad-supported tier that will be available from £4.99.

Do nothing penalty

  • Existing customers, apart from being ineligible for the current £1.99 offer, will automatically move to the Premium Disney+ subscription in November. This will increase the cost of Disney Plus from £7.99 a month to £10.99.
  • New and rejoining customers signing up to the current Disney+ deal will need to take action before Christmas. You’ll otherwise be dumped on the most expensive Premium Plan, which costs £10.99 a month.

In both cases, doing nothing will result in you automatically defaulting to Disney’s most expensive plan.

Rather than doing nothing, you’ll need to review what’s best: cancel or choose a cheaper plan. The ‘standard with ads’ plan for £4.99 which becomes available in November will give you access to HD streaming and streaming on two devices, but you won’t be able to download content to watch offline.

The new standard plan (£7.99) adds the ability to download content offline and is ad-free.

The default Premium plan (£10.99) offers 4K UHD streaming and the option to watch on four devices at the same time.

To save money, you may wish to only subscribe to Disney+ or any other service for a few months at a time. This also allows you to rotate various streaming subscriptions through the year. Doing this also gives each streaming service time to sufficiently replenish their content library with new content before you return.
